3 theme hits and misses from AMG

Will Shick and Will Pagani always say that theme is the most important part when designing a character. And I fully agree with that. I think of the 206 characters currently in the game they have a hit quote of above 90%. Today I want to focus on characters that are good on the table and either fail to represent the character on the board or do an especially good job at it:
(Click on the pictures to enhance them)

Classic Iron Man is a very good 3 threat Backpoint sitter. He's tough, offers good control and even good damage potential for his threat level. What he isn't, is a character that you'd feel behaves like Iron Man does when you see him in the Comics, Animated series or MCU.

The Realisation of Ant-Man is absolutely fantastic. He may not sit at the very top of the power curve but he's good at his job and much more important: he's super fun to play because he does exactly what you'd expect Ant-Man to do. Constantly changing size and zooming around the battlefield. Outstanding design.

Being affiliated in my two most played Affiliations (Asgard and Guardians) Bill is my most played model in the game by quite a margin. And there's absolutely zero argument about his strength in the game and it's not like his design failed completely. It's basically just that you'd imagine him being more damage focused from how he acts in the comics. That said, please don't ever change anything about him AMG ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ˜… (and chance happening to him would probably tone his unparalleled Durability most likely).

Bills biggest competitor for the title of best overall 4 threat Shang-Chi plays like a Martial Arts movie which is exactly what he should feel like. Arguments about him being a bit too good at what he does aside his design is absolutely fantastic.

Hulk is probably the best model in the game threat for threat. His design is probably very much based on the version we see in the (Will Shick recommended) Avengers Assemble animated series*, where's very in control of his actions and emotions. Because the MCP version also feels very much like that and not so much like the ones I know of recent comic runs.

*You should watch it if you have the time and haven't already. Much better representation of the characters and storylines than any MCU film really.

Is this whole article just an excuse to gush more about how my favorite character in Marvel has been designed for the game absolutely perfectly? Yes of course. But I'm just so happy about it. Is Rich here at the very top of the curve for 5s? No not really but he's a strong one nevertheless and a very good affiliated choice for the Guardians while playing exactly as you'd imagine he would. Fantastic work on AMGs part once again.

So as I said at the beginning theme misses from AMG are few and far apart with them also often coming from earlier in the games life cycle where they hadn't as much experience with it as they do now.

Affiliation Overview: Spider-Foes (2026 update)

Why should you play the affiliation  Are you a somewhat of a scientist yourself? Do you like crushing arachnids? Do you love making overly complicated plans and see them ruined by a teenager?  Spider-Foes are a super fun faction, which boosts the best looking line of miniatures in the game and a very fun and unique play style with tricks and traps.  How to start the affiliation  As long as it's available you absolutely start with the Spider-Foes Starter set. It's the so gle best deal in MCP and probably all of tabletop wargaming.  The only characters you're missing out of the affiliation after that are:  Kingpin (available in the Criminal Syndicate Affiliation pack, which is a good additional pick up after the starter set)  Doctor Octopus (available in the Spider-Foes Affiliation Pack or Rivals Panel)  Doc Ock, Sinister Scientist (available in the Earth Mightiest Core Set, a good additional pick up if you need terrain) Venom (currently de f...

Affiliation Overview: Web Warriors

2026 Update in progress  Why should you play the affiliation  Peter Parker is the single most popular character in the world. Miles and Gwen share between them the focus of the two best superhero movies of all time and are extremely popular characters in their own rights.  On the table Web Warriors are a supreme objective play team building off of their core of incredible 3 threats. They are big enough nowadays to offer different approaches too though.  How to start the affiliation  Untypically I don't think getting the affiliation pack is always the best way to start here. While Miles and Gwen are absolute core models to the affiliation, 4 threat Peter Parker will very rarely (if ever) see the table and Venom is decent but really up to personal taste. And seeing how the only real benefit of the affiliation pack is getting the additional Peter for free you can really decide if that's worth it for you. If you own core set 1 you already have the character a...

Affiliation Overview: Defenders (updated)

Why should you play the affiliation  Defenders are a giant affiliation containing both the more mystic focused Defenders of Doctor Strange and also the Marvel Knights which made up the Netflix show Defenders.  On the board Defenders have a super deep roster with a tonne of great characters and some variety in play style.  How to start the affiliation Update: In Q2 2025 AMG releases the Defenders affiliation pack which uniquely comes with five models in Doctor Strange, Wong, Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. You have to pick this pack up first and absolutely should.  After that I would first pick up Shang-Chi and Silver Sable followed by Hulk and then Namor and Black Panther, Chosen of Bast. You have your core very much there. The affiliation is very deep and has a lot of good characters but with those mentioned you have your probably most used models in hand already. Also all of the affiliated TTCs. Just note that Pentagrams of Falafel (let me have fun with t...
