Tomorrow is the release day of AMG's new game Star Wars Shatterpoint. How much can this affect the MCP community?
In the negative:
Many MCP players could "migrate" to SWSP, or at least play it as an addition, reducing the number of MCP players. Fewer players playing the game means fewer opportunities to get new players into the game.
AMG could focus less on MCP than before. This can show up in MCP releases (no new minis in June) and less intense and regular balancing updates. I have a lot of faith in AMG for balance updates; I'm a little less optimistic about minis support because they're just not a big company like GW. The fact that 2 new MCP boxes will be released in July as usual is a good sign, but I can imagine that in the future there will only be something new every two months or that it will come out to one box SWSP and one box MCP per month. Happy to be wrong on this though.
The content that the Internet produces about MCP could decrease. Jesse from Fury's Finest has already started a SWSP podcast, Omnus from Omnus Protocol is co-hosting one and there's a good chance more will follow. Currently, and to their credit, it has had absolutely no effect on the regularity of their MCP podcasts and I'm optimistic it will stay that way. Nevertheless, this results in fewer opportunities for the content creators to play themselves.
The MCP community is currently growing rapidly, thanks to the excellent basic rules, lots of great content, AMG's finger on the pulse of the game and last but not least the popular IP. But I see the danger that with SWSP you will now throw a stick in your own spokes.
But I don't just want to do black painting here, so the possible positive effects are:
The larger and (even) more popular IP could attract more players. While Disney's Episodes 7-9 weren't, shall we say, highlights, the Disney+ Star Wars series are for the most part absolutely respectable and have rightly kept the franchise's popularity high.
The basic similarity of the rules could eventually bring players who come to AMG through SWSP to MCP as well. From my own tabletop past I can report how I came from Lord of the Rings to Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40k. Something similar can and will certainly happen with Shatterpoint players, who will then also try MCP.
More sales overall for AMG also means more resources and releases for both games. While I remain concerned that the release of SWSP could shrink the MCP community, I do hope that the game will sell well. Because for us as players of their games, more sales for AMG can only be positive overall. This ensures support for all games and the jobs of the company's employees. In the best case, the team can be expanded and more releases for everyone are the result.
Conclusion:
It remains to be seen whether the positive or negative effects will outweigh the negative ones, but I take it for granted that the release of SWSP will have an impact on MCP.
Will I play Shatterpoint myself?
I have decided against it. Besides the problem that I don't think it's realistic to start another tabletop game (the 10th edition of 40k is also coming out this month and I have a group of 9 people here locally for that) I listened to the rules of the game and didn't like a few things, like the card deck to activate. I'm happy when the people who play it like it, but it's not for me.
If everything goes well I can finally play a live MCP game again tomorrow (unfortunately my opponent this week in the TTS League hasn't reacted to my messages until today...) and there will be a batrep with photos soon 🙂

Morgen ist der Release Tag von AMGs neuem Spiel Star Wars Shatterpoint. Wie sehr kann sich das auf die MCP Community auswirken?
Im negativen:
Viele Spieler von MCP könnten zu SWSP "abwandern" oder es zumindest zusätzlich spielen, sodass sich die Zahl der MCP Spieler verringert. Weniger Spieler die das Spiel spielen heißt damit auch weniger Möglichkeiten neue Spieler ins Spiel zu bekommen.
AMG könnte den Fokus weniger auf MCP legen als bisher. Das kann sich in MCP Releases (keine neuen Minis im Juni) und weniger intensiven und regelmäßigen Updates zum Balancing zeigen. Ich habe sehr großes Vertrauen in AMG in Sachen Balance Updates; in Sachen Minis Support bin ich etwas weniger optimistisch da sie einfach keine riesen Firma wie z.B. GW sind. Dass im Juli wieder wie bisher gewohnt 2 neue MCP Boxen raus kommen ist ein gutes Zeichen aber ich kann mir vorstellen, dass es zukünftig nur alle zwei Monate was neues gibt oder es auf eine Box SWSP und eine Box MCP pro Monat rauslaufen wird.
Der Content den das Internet über MCP produziert könnte sich verringern. Aktuell, und das muss man beiden hoch anrechnen, hat es absolut keinen Effekt auf die Regelmäßigkeit ihrer MCP Podcasts gehabt und ich bin optimistisch, dass das auch so bleiben wird. Dennoch ergibt sich somit weniger Möglichkeiten für die Content Creator selbst zu spielen.
Die MCP Community wächst aktuell schnell, was an den hervorragenden Grundregeln, dem vielen großartigen Content, AMGs Finger am Puls des Spiels und nicht zuletzt auch der beliebten IP zu verdanken ist. Doch ich sehe die Gefahr, dass man sich nun mit SWSP selbst einen Stock in die Speichen wirft.
Ich möchte hier aber nicht nur Schwarz Malerei betreiben daher die möglichen Auswirkungen im positiven:
Die größere und (noch) beliebtere IP könnte mehr Spieler anlocken. Während Disneys Episoden 7-9 sagen wir Mal keine Highlights waren können die Disney+ Star Wars Serien sich zum großen Teil absolut sehen lassen und haben die Popularität des Franchise zu Recht hoch gehalten.
Die grundlegende Ähnlichkeit der Regeln könnte Spieler die durch SWSP zu AMG spielen kommen auf Dauer auch zu MCP bringen. Aus meiner eigenen Tabletop Vergangenheit kann ich berichten, wie ich von Herr der Ringe über Warhammer Fantasy zu Warhammer 40k gekommen bin. Ähnliches kann und wird sicher auch mit Shatterpoint Spielern passieren, die dann auch MCP ausprobieren werden.
Mehr Umsatz insgesamt für AMG bedeutet auch mehr Ressourcen und Releases für beide Spiele. Während ich nach wie vor Sorge habe, dass die MCP Community durch den Release von SWSP schrumpfen kann hoffe ich dennoch, dass sich das Spiel hervorragend verkaufen wird. Denn für uns als Spieler ihrer Spiele kann mehr Umsatz für AMG insgesamt nur positiv sein. So wird der Support für alle Spiele und due Jobs der Mitarbeiter der Firma gesichert. Im besten Fall kann das Team erweitert werden und mehr Releases für alle sind die Folge.
Fazit:
Es bleibt abzuwarten ob die positiven oder negativen Auswirkungen überwiegen werden aber, dass der Release von SWSP sich auf MCP auswirken wird sehe ich als sicher an.
Werde ich selbst auch Shatterpoint spielen?
Ich habe mich dagegen entschieden. Neben dem Problem, dass ich es nicht für realistisch halte noch ein weiteres Tabletop Spiel anzufangen (die 10. Edition von 40k kommt auch diesen Monat raus und dafür habe ich eine Gruppe von 9 Leuten hier lokal) habe ich mir die Regeln des Spiels angehört und fand ein paar Sachen, wie das Karten Deck zur Aktivierung, nicht so gut. Ich freue mich wenn es den Leuten die es spielen gefällt, für mich ist es jedoch nichts.
Wenn alles gut geht kann ich morgen endlich wieder ein live MCP Spiel machen (mein Gegner diese Woche in der TTS League hat sich leider nicht bis heute nicht gemeldet...) und es gibt dann zeitnah einen Batrep mit Fotos 🙂
