Yondu Hot Takes

Today we've got the card reveal we were still missing for the January releases in Yondu and the P2P was already kind of Hot Takey itself so let's see what I can add here:

Yondus obvious biggest and most important thing on this card is his, frankly amazing, builder. Range 5, 5 dice Engery, that ignores Cover, has a Wild Slow and reroll one if Yondu is holding or contesting an objective is plain and simply fantastic. His Spender on the other hand, while super thematic, is less exciting for my taste. While it has the potential to hit every single enemy model in a single attack action the double trigger is just below 50% without the reroll and still only around 60% with it. Which means it absolutely can and will let you down when you would've needed it the most.

Yondos coolest ability is him being an Extract vaccum cleaner. As they mentioned in the P2P you'll probably use this more to ensure the extract that another back point sitter, like Rocket, was holding to stay in your possesion, than charge Yondu up into the fight. Because he will live basically seconds in close. Quickdraw is a cute but ultimately underwhelming superpower but it does profit from The Pirate Way at least making it a mathmatical 6 defense dice. And with his great builder, Yondu shouldn't be too power starved to occasionally use it.

Yondus biggest issue will be to find a home on the team. Guardians already sport three good affiliated 4 threats in Agent Venom, Beta Ray Bill and Gamora (in this order for me) and all of Star-Lord, Rocket and now Nova do basically the same thing as him, which is shoot strong Engery attacks from a long distance away, while all of the other 4s offer something much more unique.

Yondu does come with a TTC so maybe that's the saving grace here?

OK this card is pretty rad. It doesn't have to be played in the Power Phase or Yondus activation which makes this immediatly better than Elsas and Man-Things cards. And the effect could be very strong. The biggest issue here is that, you kind of don't want Yondu in Range 3 of the enemy in any way shape or form. But if he is, free double rerolls are: pretty good. The added power Yondu might gain here is really just gravey.

So in total: I'm sadly not convinced Yondu makes my Guardians roster. Which is a shame because his model looks awesome. I was really hoping he'd be a 3 threat though as that's the threat level Guardians could use some help.

With all the members of the January relases now revealed and Across the Bifrost still down I have decided that I'll completely rewrite the Midnight Sons and Guardians of the Galaxy Affiliation Overviews. They should be out before the end of the year I hope.

If you want to support me in what I do here and get something out of these and especially the Affiliation Overview articles you could consider becoming a Patron at www.patreon.com/sgprotocol

Affiliation Overview: Web Warriors

Why should you play the affiliation  Peter Parker is the single most popular character in the world. Miles and Gwen share between them the focus of the two best superhero movies of all time and are extremely popular characters in their own rights.  On the table Web Warriors are a supreme objective play team building off of their core of incredible 3 threats. They are big enough nowadays to offer different approaches too though.  How to start the affiliation  Untypically I don't think getting the affiliation pack is always the best way to start here. While Miles and Gwen are absolute core models to the affiliation, 4 threat Peter Parker will very rarely (if ever) see the table and Venom is decent but really up to personal taste. And seeing how the only real benefit of the affiliation pack is getting the additional Peter for free you can really decide if that's worth it for you. If you own core set 1 you already have the character and if you own core set 2 you h...

Affiliation Overview: Defenders (updated)

Why should you play the affiliation  Defenders are a giant affiliation containing both the more mystic focused Defenders of Doctor Strange and also the Marvel Knights which made up the Netflix show Defenders.  On the board Defenders have a super deep roster with a tonne of great characters and some variety in play style.  How to start the affiliation Update: In Q2 2025 AMG releases the Defenders affiliation pack which uniquely comes with five models in Doctor Strange, Wong, Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. You have to pick this pack up first and absolutely should.  After that I would first pick up Shang-Chi and Silver Sable followed by Hulk and then Namor and Black Panther, Chosen of Bast. You have your core very much there. The affiliation is very deep and has a lot of good characters but with those mentioned you have your probably most used models in hand already. Also all of the affiliated TTCs. Just note that Pentagrams of Falafel (let me have fun with t...

Affiliation Overview: Uncanny X-Men (updated)

Why should you play the affiliation  X-Men are far and away the most popular Marvel part after the overall most popular character in the world (Spider-Man). They are not only a favourite of the community but also clearly of AMG being the faction with the most build options for their characters.  On the table they are super flexible, have a huge list of affiliated models and very strong TTCs.  How to start the affiliation  Update: from October 2025 AMG releases new single Person starter sets. One of them is the X-Men starter set:  Aside from the ten characters it also contains ten dice and the measuring tools. The X-Men starter (which is a Brotherhood of Mutants starter at the same time) is a permanent addition to the line up, whereas the Spider-Foes one will only he sold for a limited time.  The new starter set is absolutely the perfect first purchase for X-Men but until then the X-Men affiliation pack is the best starting point giving you two of you...
