Ben Ransom has dropped the Mighty Avengers affiliation list over the rules forum and we can finally start building lists now:
Characters (11)
* Spectrum (4)
Ant-Man (3)
Black Panther, Chosen of Bast (3)
Black Widow (2)
Blue Marvel (5)
Captain America (Sam Wilson) (3)
Captain Marvel, Cosmic Avenger (5)
Iron Man (3)
Luke Cage (3)
She-Hulk (6)
Steve Rogers, Captain America (4)
We of course start with Spectrum who is the Affiliations only leader with a really strong leadership on a very good character. You definitely don't mind playing her every game.
Ant-Man was already confirmed to get an update come Adepticon but he's already an interesting piece here. He doesn't need a lot of power for himself so he's going to be able to feed other characters well with power he'd usually gain per the leadership.
Black Panther, Chosen of Bast is fast, has stealth and good attacks. He's just a solid model with no particular synergy with the leadership in my opinion.
Original core set Black Widow makes the list instead of her other two versions and this one has the unique benefit of being a 2 threat. If she's there she'll be there to help make affiliation.
Blue Marvel is one of the reasons you'll play the affiliation. He needs support to be an every game piece but I do think that's going to be the goal for Mighty Avengers in initial testing.
Sam is a model that can bring the mentioned support for Blue Marvel with his Air Lift superpower. The leadership can easily get the Air Lift online and Sam with his Gainer can also contribute well to hand out power to allies. The core 3 threat in most games I'd say. He also gives you the almost automatic dual to regular Avengers if you feel you need that. And with 8 of your 11 characters also being Avengers affiliated that's extremely easy to do.
Cosmic Carol can be a constant "taker" of the leadership to keep her in Binary form for as long as possible. She won't help her friends at all probably and needs to be the absolute focus of the squad to work but it can be rewarding.
Iron Man is just a rock solid 3 threat. He adds long range fire support, control, and tankiness.
Luke Cage is one of the tankiest characters in the game and can take hits for his friends. He's your man to pick something up on the midline and live.
She-Hulk is interesting. She's getting an update soon which, at the very least, will give her an injured side and 10/10 Stamina. But even before she can be your affiliated Kaiju, whose job is mostly to counter enemy Kaijus.
And finally we have Steve Rogers, Captain America or Boomer Cap as he's often referred to. Combing the worst abilities of Steve 1 and 3 with no leadership on his stat card (but a TTC one for SHIELD). He's also not on the re pack list so far so it's unlikely he'll be updated anytime soon... He has the best physical Steve sculpt by a gigantic margin at least but that will probably not secure him a roster spot anyway I'm afraid.
What you completely lack in affiliation here is an "engine starter". In Spectrums leadership I think you'll want at least one character in your squad that can gain at least one guaranteed power which can immediately be given to someone else to get the train rolling (similar to how under Professor X you always want to have Magik, Nightcrawler, Cable or any other character that can immediately use a superpower, in your squad).
Who are these characters that, in my opinion, should directly top the list of potential splashes?
Characters (10)
Crimson Dynamo (4)
Dynamo is one of multiple "Meditate" characters on this list. So characters that can spend an action to gain 2 power themselves of which they can gift one to someone else under Monicas leadership. These are your second tier synergy characters here. They need to do more than that as spending an action on one character to make that of another one better is not always the right call.
Dynamo does have a Range 4 Gainer Beam so he'll contribute to the leadership over the course of the game.
Juggernaut (5)
Juggernaut is very power hungry himself but he can reliably gain a couple for his first move action a turn. He's your beefy boy choice.
Karnak (3)
Karnak is another Meditate character. He's also very good defensively and relatively cheap so parking him on a back secure and having him meditate there the entire game to fuel your other models might not be the worst plan. He can definitely defend himself when someone comes to deal with him.
Lockjaw (3)
He might as well be affiliated. I don't think theres a world where the big doggo isn't making your Mighty Avengers roster. He immensely helps out Blue Marvel and has so much synergy with the leadership that he's probably an every game piece.
Nova (5)
The single best model on D shapes secures (and Marvels best character), Nova is the more offensive and less tanky version of Juggernaut. He misses dice fixing but what's better than rerolls? Getting extra dice from Monica after you've already gotten 3 extra for moving, which also gave you two power of which one can be funneled to a friend. Nova is an immensely undervalued character in the meta and he has found a great second home here. (Unrelated but I hope Adam Warlocks leadership is good for my boy Richard, too)
Prowler (4)
Prowler needs to interact with an objective token to generate a power but that's what you want him to do anyway round 1 so it's pretty much guaranteed. Long Move Wallcrawler also means the new priority roll shouldn't screw you over as he can reach any extract on the midline when deployed exactly center.
Sentinel MK4 (4)
A big tanky robot that Monica can boost the dice on top of how it can boost them itself sounds nice and the end of every activation is a guaranteed power for someone else and the robot. Only problem is that Monica and Blue Marvel already struggle with action economy and Sentinels have a similar problem. But of course Lockjaw can fix that. Restraint Cables is a very good superpower though that can pull enemy characters into your shooting range which also helps Adam and Monica.
Sentinel Prime MK4 (5)
Very similar to the regular MK4, but for a threat more you get rerolls which of course form a nice combo with Spectrums additional dice.
Vision (4)
He can "meditate" and has a Gainer Beam, though only at range 3. His 2 power throw can be easily online every round with the leadership which is of course great.
Wong (2)
He's your cheapest engine starter but also the one who'll probably contribute the least to your game plan after that. He can be parked in the back and just spend his day powering up your team but he'll fold quickly when engaged.
My example roster would look something like this:
Characters (10)
* Spectrum (4)
Ant-Man (3)
Blue Marvel (5)
* Captain America (Sam Wilson) (3)
Iron Man (3)
Luke Cage (3)
Lockjaw (3)
Nova (5)
Sentinel MK4 (4)
Prowler (4)
Team Tactics (10)
Going All Out
Fall Back (R)
Heroes for Hire
High-Tech Heist
Indomitable (R)
Phase Manipulation
Pym Particles
The Man of Marvels
The Ultimates
Call for Backup
Secure Crisis
Deadly Meteors Mutate Civilians (I, 17)
Guardians Save Shi‘ar Empress in Style (M, 17)
Infinity Formula Goes Missing! (B, 17)
Lockdown! Security Systems Stymie Breakout (S, 18)
Riots Spark Over Extremis 3.0 (D, 17)
Extract Crisis
Inhumans Deploy Advanced Weaponry (O, 18)
Deadly Legacy Virus Cured? (C, 19)
The Montesi Formula Found (E, 18)
Alien Ship Crashes In Downtown! (C, 17)
Scientific Samples Found in Discovered Universe (D, 17)
I'm absolutely not sure these crisis cards are the right ones and maybe one of the affiliated 3 threats should be Widow instead to make squad building easier.
Overall Mighty Avengers seem like a strong and fun affiliation on first view. I'll see them from the other side of the table for starters as my brother is going to pick them up and he remains my most common opponent.
That's it for today.
Cheers from Germany 🍻
