Last Saturday I was finally able to play my first game with Adam Warlock, Phyla-Vell and Moondragon and of course the Cosmic Awareness leadership. In what would end up a dice fest we played 19 threat on Intrusions and Legacy Virus for the ultimately slow 6 VPs per round crisis combination. I could, and in the end maybe should, have picked Lockdown instead of Intrusions but I was afraid Adam himself would lack the necessary mobility.
I faced off against Benni's Malekith Cabal.
They brought Mal, Bullseye, Killmonger, Baron Zemo and Winter Soldier with Soldat Activated.
Since I definitely wanted to have all of Adam, Quasar and Moondragon on the table immediately my choice was between my two other 4 threats in the list which are Yondu and Shang-Chi. I decided on Shang as I didn't think Yondu would be at his best on a double C map.
I deployed the Power Couple together on my right side which ended up having Zemo and Killmonger, Adam straight in the middle against Bucky and Malekith, and finally Shang you should have an easy match up against Bullseye.
Round 1 began with Zemo picking up the extract on my right side. Adam dared to grab the middle and Bullseye took the one on my left. Now the danger started. Shang moved and Flying kicked Bullseye straight to a daze. Bucky then tried to react but couldn't reach Shang even with the Hydra hop off of Malekith. I think terrain was in the way off a better position. He moved once and took a single shot but couldn't get rid of Shang, who was helped by the leadership. An early daze would have allowed Malekith to get the short advance and additional power to charge Adam Warlock at the midline, but this way he had to spend his activation just to tie the center point.
On my right flank Killmonger and Zemo had a stand off with Quasar and Moondragon right on the secure.
I was able to get a 3:1 lead in round 1 but Benni would have the first turn next round.
And it was a painful one. Killmonger earned his name by slicing Quasar in half with his two attack.
Adam Warlock then retaliated with a spender that spiked hard into Malekith for a combined 8 damage (with the throw damage) but got hit by the counter attack from Soldat Bucky for a nasty bleed and a couple of damage. Fearing the wrath of almost dazed Malekith Adam used his teleport to get on top of the terrain.
Bullseye, who had used the leadership trigger to get some distance, then tried to retaliate against Shang-Chi and was able to never miss a total of 3 damage onto him.
Shang, knowing getting rid of that annoying knives thrower would be very important for him, then charged in but completely whiffed the attack and got another automatic damage from Bullseye's parting shot, leaving him on one. Attempting another attack and possibly dazing in his own activation was too dangerous so he just went back to the secure.
Malekith, stacked with a full 10 power then attempted an absolute killer activation: he charged across the size 4 dinosaur and attacked Shang-Chi on the other secure. But his attack fell extremely flat and with a nice additional block throw the Leadership, Shang blocked everything. And had exactly two power on him, while Malekith stood directly in front of a terrain piece he could be thrown into reactively. Dazing in his own activation. Benni immediately realized he could have used Midnight Phantasmagoria before the charge to Push Adam and heal himself so that wouldn't be able to happen.
Not wanting to face the Master Swordsman himself Moondragon used the teleport of the secure to retake the middle that Adam had abandoned and took a couple of shots into Bucky but without too much success.
Seeing that neat little trick Zemo did the same to slice Shang-Chi in half taking his extract and his secure in the process.
At the start of Round 3 I got priority and played Galaxies Greatest on Phyla-Vell. She then proceeded to use the Nega Bands to shred Killmonger to pieces, retaking the extract.
Malekith woke up from his daze and dazed Adam Warlock himself.
Zemo took care of Shang-Chi and Winter Soldier pushed and shot Moon Dragon for a pretty bad round for me.
In the next Round Adam Warlock tried to get rid of Bucky without any success and then shot another Spender into Malekith. And just like before he spiked heavily with the help of the Reality Gem and his leadership. He dealt 6 damage and with the automatic throw that KOed Malekith then and there. Adam used his Range 2 place and grabbed the extract back.
But other parts of the board didn't look so good... Killmonger took two hits into Quasar KOing her in return.
I then made probably my biggest blender of the game in passing instead of activating Moondragon. She would've been in a position to Charge, Spender Winter Soldier, use the Intrusion teleport and Spender into either Zemo or Killmonger (both long shots of course, but better than nothing).
Benni activated Bucky and just teleported away, effectively staggering Heather in the process.
Being forced to walk, teleport, single spender into Killmonger, which didn't do nearly as much damage effectively meant the end for Moondragon as well, when died later in the round.
The last round was just my Adam Warlock holding on to the middle with everyone teleporting in to kill him (dropping their extracts in the process) and ultimately succeeding for a 13:8 instand win for Benni.
I think I missed using Adams additional defense dice and his reduce to 0 for almost the entire game but also made some bad decisions leading to a deserved loss in the end.
But the leadership is my favorite in the game after just the one try. I look forward to playing it a bunch more, including the next tournament in the middle of March.
Cheers from Germany 🍻
