Tournament Report: Osnabrücker Secret Wars 7

After not being able to attend any events in Osnabrück last year I was finally able to be back to the 7th installment of the Secret Wars. We had an awesome attendance of 16 people, making it the biggest MCP tournament ever in Germany (the community is growling slowly bit surely).

I talked about what I would take in length in this article

And here's what I have ultimately decided to take to the event:

Characters (10)
* Adam Warlock (Space, Bonded Soul) (8)
Quasar (4)
Moondragon (3)
Valkyrie and Elendil (4)
Rocket Raccoon (2)
Yondu (4)
* Star-Lord (3)
Nova (5)
* Red Skull, Master of Hydra (5)
Iron Monger (3)

Team Tactics (10)
Cosmic Awareness
Galaxy‘s Greatest
Indomitable (R)
Lovable Misfits
Recalibration Matrix
Warpath
Survival
Brace for Impact (R)
Cosmic Obliteration
Call for Backup

Secure Crisis
Deadly Meteors Mutate Civilians (I, 17)
Lockdown! Security Systems Stymie Breakout (S, 18)
Intrusions Open Across City As Seals Collapse (C, 19)
Wedding Party Targeted in Terrible Attack! (R, 20)
M‘Kraan Crystal Gets Heroes Home! (G, 19)

Extract Crisis
Alien Ship Crashes In Downtown! (C, 17)
Inhumans Deploy Advanced Weaponry (O, 18)
The Montesi Formula Found (E, 18)
Deadly Legacy Virus Cured? (C, 19)
Fear Grips World As “Worthy“ Terrorize Cities (D, 18)

So I ended up dropping Cosmic Ghost Rider and taking my main man Nova to the event. I was also able to get Iron Monger ready for the table and decided that Red Skull, Master of Hydra would be worth a shot.

Here's how my games went:

1. Round vs Black Sad 007 (Defenders)

Black Sad 007 has only started playing MCP a month ago and played his 7th total game here. Absolutely awesome to see new players and he's been great opponent as well 🙂

The only issues we've had during the game where kind of to be expected as we played on a table with a game each to our left and right so hearing each other sometimes became tricky. But that's a small sacrifice for a full room.

The crisis pull came up to Intrusions and Struggle for the Cube and he chose 17 threat.

I brought Adam Warlock, Rocket, Star-Lord and Valkyrie on Elendil against Doctor Strange, iHulk, Wong and Spider-Man Noir.

Valkyrie was on fire in this game taking out Strange and later Spider-Man Noir. Rocket picked up a Cube and executed Wong over the course of the game. Star-Lord somehow lived longer than he should have and Adam Warlock used his Space Gem well for scoring before the final attempt to claw back by my opponent with iHulk against Adam Warlock fell completely flat and he took his revenge with a Spender that included no less than 4 crits converting into another 3 successes. The automatic throw was what ultimately took out Immortal Hulk and had us end the game at 22:7.

For not even having played 10 games yet Black Sad 007 did very well. We talked afterwards and my main tip was to be way more active with Doctor Strange and also that Wong wasn't the best choice on a center line secure. Hopefully we'll meet again sometime!

Round 2 vs Goboon (Defenders/ Midnight Sons)

I've played Goboon once in one of our German speaking TTS leagues but haven't met him in person before. Another great opponent and someone who has made it to 3. Place at a OSW before.

We ended up on Wedding Party and Legacy Virus and I chose 20 threat.

I brought Adam Warlock, Quasar, Star-Lord and Red Skull, Master of Hydra against Doctor Strange, iHulk, Man-Thing, Wong and Black Cat.

This game was a rollercoaster. Black Cat and Star-Lord battled on side out between the two of them (and the Hydra Grunts helped at the start) for most of the game while everyone else mostly smash bashed on the other side. Which turned out to be a fatal mistake on my part because Doctor Strange got a Seven Suns of Cinnibus off that (combined with a Builder afterwards) dazed Adam Warlock and gave severe damage to both Red Skull and Quasar. The latter was able to answer somewhat in kind with a Spender Beam dealing loads of damage to Strange and Man-Thing but Red Skull was taken out.
We battled it out for a long time and I was somehow able to hold on to a tiny advantage in VPs up until round 5 but two major things happened and ultimately cost me the game:

Wong was able to last active, walk over and Mystic Ward the secure Star-Lord was holding and then in Round 6 play Pentagrams which got iHulk over to the other secure where I had a 2 HP, hexed Star-Lord that needed to survive two attacks and "surprisingly" didn't. That let Goboon score both Secures and take the game 17:15.

Red Skull was pretty much a total disaster in this game and not worth his threat at all.

Hulk is Immortal Hulk

Round 3 vs TheQuest (New Mutants)

Luckily not another Defenders (which were the most popular faction in the event)

TheQuest is a player semi local to me but somehow we've only played against each other in events so far.

We played 19 threat on Intrusions and Legacy Virus.

Adam Warlock, Moondragon, Nova and Iron Monger took on Magik, Cable, Warlock, Emma Frost and Colossus.

Nova, how could I have ever questioned you? Richard Rider took on three New Mutants by himself: Cable, Magik and Warlock, while Iron Monger and Adam Warlock took the middle against Colossus and Emma, while Moondragon got to chill on my right flank completely un opposed at the beginning of the game. A big Nova Spender to start round two gave my the upper hand at attrition and Iron Mongers spender is incredible with how easy the stealing trigger is especially under the Cosmic Awareness leadership.

The game went on with Nova being a Big Dumb Hero from rounds 3-6 and taking out Warlock and Cable while somehow living through everything the New Mutants threw at him. Adam Warlock did his job well and took both Colossus and Magik of the board while Moondragon won her 1v1 with Emma who had teleported to her. I would have had the chance to go for the tabling but since I had collected all the Cures on Adam I decided against it and instead took the 7 additional VPs (6 from assembling the Virus Cure and 1 from Nova on his secure) to end the game at 21:13.

So I went 2:1 overall and made it to 7th of 16.

I've set some goals beforehand. Let's see if I was able to achieve any of them:

"-Play every character on the roster in at least one game.
This is actually going to be very hard to pull off when it's very unlikely that I can bring more than 4 models per game. The smaller and more attainable version of the goal is to play as many different characters on the day as possible and sensible. "

9 out of 10. Somehow Yondu, arguably Guardians strongest 4 threat couldn't make it into a game. But of course all three of my games were midline brawls where he's not at his best.

"- Use the leadership in every single Turn of each game.
Only when there's no clear improvement to be had do nothing. "

I was very happy with me remembering the leadership.

"- take loads of photos
This has nothing to do with my actual play but can easily be forgotten when I'm focused on the game. "

Yeah I do as well as I would have liked in this regard

"- remembering all my triggers and if possible also my opponents
Losing games because you forgot what your own character can do makes you feel very stupid. For example in my second Adam Warlock game I thought Bonded Soul Gem would only work in Range 4 and didn't even get the idea of reading the card which was right in front of me... "

I haven't missed a single Bonded Soul Gem Trigger I think. But I forgot to ever use Quasars own Shields before she was almost KOed and missed a couple of opportunities for Moondragon to use Distracting Illusions.

"- win at least one game
Going 0:3 would definitely sting a bit. Not as much as when I would bring a list I'm more practiced with and that I would build to try to win but still. "

I've won two and the loss was very close so I can't complain.

Thanks again to Benni for running an awesome event with such amazing tables and congratulations to:

Goboon (Midnight Sons/ Defenders)  2:1 for 3.

Crithappens (SHIELD) going 3:0 for 2.

KerasTerune (Kingpin Criminals) 3:0 for 1.

And Luuutz for winning Best Painted (originally tied with Crithappens in votes so we needed a tie breaker vote for that. Both were absolutely excellent painted rosters and deserved to win it).

Sadly I didn't take good pictures of the rosters but at least here are some of Benni's excellent tables:

So what is next for me?

Wednesday is my 5th and final game of our current German speaking TTS league against OSW 7 winner KerasTerune (at least he's going to play Black Order and not Kingpin) which is going to be my last game with Xavier led X-Men (2:2 in the league so far). And I'm certainly not going to miss having to play Professor X. What a miserable model to play (but a great leadership...)

Casually I want to get a Kang roster ready for the table and competitively I'll stay with Guardians for our next league starting in late April.

So let's evaluate the roster:

Characters (10)

* Adam Warlock (Space, Bonded Soul) (8)

Space Gem turned out to be a great choice for me. Sure Reality makes him more offensively reliable but Space is great for his power economy which ended up leading to more attacks.

Quasar (4)

I'm still very undecided on Phyla-Vell. She is quite tanky and Kree-Titan Hybrid Physiology is an awesome superpower. But basically all of my games with her the opponent was able to overload her with damage and conditions and it is also very taxing on her Power Economy.

Moondragon (3)

If you don't force her into sub optimal conditions like I did in my first couple of tries she's pretty good. Her own damage output outside of her Spender is pretty minor but she is tanky and fast.

Valkyrie and Elendil (4)

Very much fun to play and looking awesome on the table. The dou might very much be my new favorite 4 threat in the game. She's here to stay (for now at least).

Rocket Raccoon (2)

Still my favorite 2 threat in the game and locked into the roster.

Yondu (4)

As said before I think he might be the strongest affiliated 4 threat for Guardians of the Galaxy at the moment and he's gonna stay in.

* Star-Lord (3)

Peter is a good affiliated 3 threat even if you don't care about his leadership. I'm not sure if I should give Drax a chance but for now Star-Lord stays in.

Nova (5)

How could I have ever doubted him? Awesome as always. Locked into the roster now.

Red Skull, Master of Hydra (5)

I wasn't very impressed with him. He does help with the model count but his lack of action compression really hinderd his output. He might get another chance before he loses his spot.

Iron Monger (3)

Simply amazing. Awesome model, awesome rules and great synergy with the leadership as his best ability is the steal on his Spender which Cosmic Awareness makes pretty trivial to get the trigger for.

Team Tactics (10)

Cosmic Awareness

The leadership. Obviously still in.

Galaxy‘s Greatest

The best affiliated TTC. In for every game.

Indomitable (R)

Used in every game and important to stay in position. With the low model count getting displaced after already having activated.

Lovable Misfits

High risk High reward card. Not the right choice for every game but stays in the roster. Hasn't gotten played in the event.

Recalibration Matrix

The most generic choice in the game and never used. I actually also never used Adams "Recal" on his card.

Warpath

Another tool to counter act Displacement. Not played during the event.

Survival

The attrition tool it is not supposed to be. Also never used.

Brace for Impact (R)

I've come full circle on Brace and have used it in every game and was pretty happy I did.

Cosmic Obliteration

Stapled to any kind of Red Skull but he didn't get to use it in the game I played him as he just died too quickly.

Call for Backup

A good option though not fully necessary when you have Nova in.

Secure Crisis

Deadly Meteors Mutate Civilians (I, 17)

Lockdown! Security Systems Stymie Breakout (S, 18)

Intrusions Open Across City As Seals Collapse (C, 19)

Wedding Party Targeted in Terrible Attack! (R, 20)

M‘Kraan Crystal Gets Heroes Home! (G, 19)

I'm unsure if I shouldn't change some of the secure to wider ones to take more advantage of my long range fire power.

Extract Crisis
Alien Ship Crashes In Downtown! (C, 17)

Inhumans Deploy Advanced Weaponry (O, 18)

The Montesi Formula Found (E, 18)

Deadly Legacy Virus Cured? (C, 19)

Fear Grips World As “Worthy“ Terrorize Cities (D, 18)

I'm pretty happy with my extract selection still, though I really liked playing Cubes as well so maybe that will take one spot.

Thanks for reading all the way to the end.

Cheers from Germany 🍻

Affiliation Overview: Spider-Foes (2026 update)

Why should you play the affiliation  Are you a somewhat of a scientist yourself? Do you like crushing arachnids? Do you love making overly complicated plans and see them ruined by a teenager?  Spider-Foes are a super fun faction, which boosts the best looking line of miniatures in the game and a very fun and unique play style with tricks and traps.  How to start the affiliation  As long as it's available you absolutely start with the Spider-Foes Starter set. It's the so gle best deal in MCP and probably all of tabletop wargaming.  The only characters you're missing out of the affiliation after that are:  Kingpin (available in the Criminal Syndicate Affiliation pack, which is a good additional pick up after the starter set)  Doctor Octopus (available in the Spider-Foes Affiliation Pack or Rivals Panel)  Doc Ock, Sinister Scientist (available in the Earth Mightiest Core Set, a good additional pick up if you need terrain) Venom (currently de f...

Affiliation Overview: Web Warriors

Why should you play the affiliation  Peter Parker is the single most popular character in the world. Miles and Gwen share between them the focus of the two best superhero movies of all time and are extremely popular characters in their own rights.  On the table Web Warriors are a supreme objective play team building off of their core of incredible 3 threats. They are big enough nowadays to offer different approaches too though.  How to start the affiliation  Untypically I don't think getting the affiliation pack is always the best way to start here. While Miles and Gwen are absolute core models to the affiliation, 4 threat Peter Parker will very rarely (if ever) see the table and Venom is decent but really up to personal taste. And seeing how the only real benefit of the affiliation pack is getting the additional Peter for free you can really decide if that's worth it for you. If you own core set 1 you already have the character and if you own core set ...

Affiliation Overview: Defenders (updated)

Why should you play the affiliation  Defenders are a giant affiliation containing both the more mystic focused Defenders of Doctor Strange and also the Marvel Knights which made up the Netflix show Defenders.  On the board Defenders have a super deep roster with a tonne of great characters and some variety in play style.  How to start the affiliation Update: In Q2 2025 AMG releases the Defenders affiliation pack which uniquely comes with five models in Doctor Strange, Wong, Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. You have to pick this pack up first and absolutely should.  After that I would first pick up Shang-Chi and Silver Sable followed by Hulk and then Namor and Black Panther, Chosen of Bast. You have your core very much there. The affiliation is very deep and has a lot of good characters but with those mentioned you have your probably most used models in hand already. Also all of the affiliated TTCs. Just note that Pentagrams of Falafel (let me have fun with t...
